1998 SAT and IQ Scores by State

Sources: College Board press releases and SAT to IQ conversion chart

The calculated average IQ's below are questionable for 22 states. In these states, less than 20% of high school graduates took SAT tests, probably the brighter ones. Those questionable IQ's are replaced by ACT scores in overall state IQ numbers calculations. 1998 seems to be the last easy-to-use information on state SAT's, including pre-calculated % of students taking SAT's. The College Board does have later data at http://www.collegeboard.com/about/news_info/cbsenior/yr2004/reports.html But... (1) There are numbers but not % of students taking SAT's. One might find numbers of high school seniors in a state at another website (2) Information on each state is in a separate report (3) All reports are in PDF format, which does not foster easy data manipulation See the comment (plus my answer) on Use of SAT's on Tue, 16 Nov 2004 at http://SQ.4mg.com/usingSQ.htm . The College Board works hard to discourage simple state score comparisons, and Sloan can understand why. But that does make SAT research a challenge!

* Estimated IQ for all citizens of a state is normally set 10 points less than the IQ of SAT test takers, to make a national average of 100 IQ. This difference is proportionally reduced when over 60% of high school grads take the SAT. The overall results also fit better with 4th grade test results.
