Van Sloan's other ancestors mostly lived around Philadelphia, which became the second largest English speaking city in the world (after London) from 1750 - 1820. Ancestors included a prosperous newspaper publisher and a Revolutionary War general. They came from England, Scotland, Germany, Ireland, France, Denmark, and Holland (Van Emmen). Some arrived before William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. The ancestors of Van Sloan's wife came from Sweden and England, settling in Massachusetts before moving to California.
