Global Competitiveness Report 2003-2004
prepared annually by the World Economic Forum
Country Rankings 2003-2004 |
|
1. Finland |
9. Norway |
For the rest of the 102 countries ranked, plus the methodology used, see http://www.weforum.org/pdf/Gcr/GCR_2003_2004/Competitiveness_Rankings.pdf
These rankings correlate very highly with National Income per person, listed in http://www.worldfactsandfigures.com/gdp_country_desc.php
Several areas make up the GCI (Global Competitiveness Index) rating. For most countries, equal weight is given to the three items below. But for "core innovator" countries, half of their CGI index is determined by their technology index:
1. Technological progress (USA, Japan, Taiwan, Sweden, Switzerland, Israel, Finland, Germany, Canada, Singapore, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark, Korea, Belgium, France, Austria, United Kingdom, Norway, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Hong Kong, Italy are the 25 core innovator countries, ranked by technology)
2. Stable economic environment, including banking and national debt
3. Institutions effective: property rights, rule of law,
lack of corruptionSloan's comment: Surprisingly, a nation's average IQ is not included in the above list of competitiveness factors. The findings in IQ and the Wealth of Nations show that IQ is an important wealth determining factor.
A ranking of countries on economic freedom shown below, gives another interestting comparison on the competiveness issue. http://www.heritage.org/research/features/index/countries.cfm
